Khurja : The City of Ceramic





            Khurja the city of ceramic, located near about 90 k.m from New Delhi in the heart of uttar pradesh. Khurja's economy is basically based upon unique artistic POTTERY.


The tradition way of pottery making in Khurja, an urban hamlet near Bulandshaher disttrict. It has been acknowledged by the Geographical Indication (GI) Registry of India by awarding a GI certificate. The process was cleared in March but the certificate has been issued recently.
The mystic baked clay pottery is said to have been came to India with Afghan King Taimur Lung as he passed through Khurja along with potters from Egypt and Syria during an easterly campaign over 500 years ago.
             The art form has been kept alive by some odd 5000 artisans family who work in 500-odd units that also employ skilled and unskilled labourers. Besides decorative items and crockery, these units manufacture a number of everyday utility items like tiles, grinding balls, switches and sanitary ware.



The GI certificate acknowledges ceramic for household or kitchen utensils, crockery, earthenware, funnels, porcelain-ware, pots, flower pots, pottery, table plates, tableware (other than knives, forks and spoons), teapots, vases, works of art of porcelain, terracotta and containers (not of precious metal or coated therewith), porcelain and earthenware not included in other classes.

            An application to this effect was presented last year by export promotion commissioner, department of small scale industries and Khurja Pottery Manufacturers Association. The application was accepted and a gazette notification on it was issued in December. The certificate was awarded after the mandatory waiting period is over.


              There is only two main roads still Khurja is ranked as one of the best POTTERY exporter in Indian Market. As i also belong from Khurja i feel proud to share this glimpse of information with you.
